It was supposed to be a quasireception for people who couldn't make it to my sister's official wedding reception in Seattle. Fairly simple. Kick it off with some opening words from my dad and then eat lots of good food. Not too bad, right?
Wrong.
I don't know how but something as simple and innocent as a few opening words turned into an extended speech from my dad. Actually, more than just an extended speech.
It went from some opening words welcoming everyone to a brief lecture about the metaphor and meaning behind the flower names that were used to identify which table people were to sit at. This somehow led to some commentary about how the communist regime in China is persecuting Falun Gong people, which isn't the happiest of subjects to talk about at length at a party. After that, I think my dad sang (as requested by a guest) some Chinese song (that was not requested by a guest) in A CAPELLA. Let's just say that my dad won't be making a second career as a vocalist anytime soon.
I decided to ask my sister if she and Franklyn wanted to say anything.
"De, GET THE MICROPHONE AWAY FROM DAD."
Being the good brother that I am, I relieved Dad of the mike and babbled for a little bit. I really didn't have anything to say while up there. The rest of the evening wasn't as bad. Thank God.
